The award was presented at the Association of Residency Coordinators in Surgery Meeting on May 2, 2009 in Salt Lake City, Utah. | The award is given annually by the Association of Residency Coordinators in Surgery (ARCS) to the coordinator who has made the most significant contributions to surgery resident education. Bowman was nominated by Mary Klingensmith, M.D., program director of the Washington University General Surgery Residency, and Bradley Freeman, M.D., the residency’s associate program director. A committee of fellow coordinators selected Bowman for the award.
“Michele was recognized for her 25 years as a coordinator,” said ARCS President Kim Aggretto. “During this time, she has shown extreme dedication to her work and to her residents. She is highly regarded by her peers, both locally and nationally, and by her residents, who are grateful for the ‘home’ atmosphere she works hard to establish.”
Bowman is certified as a residency coordinator by the National Board for Certification of Training Administrators of Graduate Medical Education Programs. The board has established standards for the profession to acknowledge the expertise needed to successfully manage graduate medical education programs and to recognize those training program administrators who have achieved competence in all fields related to their profession.
The ARCS serves as an educational resource, a method for encouraging the exchange of ideas, and a support network for persons who manage surgery residency programs. |
