Written or telephone requests for information regarding our General Surgery Residency Program are accepted.
We are exclusively utilizing ERAS® (Electronic Residency Application Service https://www.aamc.org/students/medstudents/eras/) for the upcoming application process. Please contact your medical school of graduation for ERAS® information and packet application. Paper applications will not be accepted.
A preliminary review of each applicant will be made upon receipt of a complete application and will be on a first-come, first-served basis. The Dean’s letter is not required for initial review.
Applications should consist of all ERAS® materials and the following documents:
We do not have a minimum USMLE score requirement (passage on the first attempt is required), but rather review your complete application considering all provided information. High scores and academic honors, however, do influence our Selection Committee.
If you are an international medical graduate, please contact your local Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) office for more information on ERAS®. Foreign medical graduates are required to have ECFMG certification before applying to our program. We sponsor only the J1 visa and we do not review applications of candidates who have been out of medical school more than 5 years.
Our application deadline is November 1, 2017. After the Selection Committee has reviewed your completed file, and if you are offered an interview, you will be contacted by e-mail to select a date for your interview. Please be sure to include your e-mail address as part of your ERAS® application.
The interview dates are:
Friday, November 10, and Saturday, November 11, 2017
Friday, December 8, and Saturday, December 9, 2017
Friday, January 19, and Saturday, January 20, 2018
The preliminary interview date will be held in January 2018; a specific date is to be determined.
The hotel located closest to Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital is The Parkway Hotel, which is actually linked by enclosed walkway to the School of Medicine. It is located close to the Central West End Metrolink stop. For more information, please go to www.theparkwayhotel.com or call (314) 256-7777 or call toll-free at (866) 314-7700 to make your reservation (ask for Wash U rates!). Note: There are many other hotels within the area, but the Parkway Hotel is conveniently located on campus.
RECRUITMENT EVENTS TIMELINE
There is an optional Friday evening mixer from 5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. the night before the interviews that allows applicants the opportunity to meet the residents and faculty in a less formal setting. On Saturday morning, beginning at 7:00 a.m. over breakfast in Holden Auditorium in the Farrell Teaching and Learning Center (next to Bernard Becker Medical Library), Timothy J. Eberlein, MD, the Chairman of the Department of Surgery, welcomes the applicants and Paul E. Wise, MD, the General Surgery Residency Program Director, and the administrative chief residents present an overview of the training program and living in St. Louis. The interview portion of the day follows when applicants will have several interviews with faculty and senior residents. At the conclusion of the interview sessions, applicants will go on a tour of the facilities that includes the simulation lab, the hospitals and research facilities. A leisurely luncheon with applicants, faculty and residents follows the tour. The interview day concludes by 2:00 p.m., but…we do offer applicants additional choices on how to end their day with us and get to know the program and city of St. Louis a little better…(see below)!
YOU CHOOSE HOW TO END YOUR INTERVIEW DAY (OPTIONAL)
We offer two optional events that applicants and their spouses and/or significant others are encouraged to attend after the interviews. Beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, the first option is a trolley tour of St. Louis’ famous landmarks as well as neighborhoods and residents’ homes within those neighborhoods. The second optional event follows as the trolley ride ends in the Central West End (a few blocks from the medical campus and the Parkway Hotel) at a popular trendy restaurant where applicants will be met by residents (and spouses and/or significant others) to enjoy a fabulous dinner together. The evening will conclude around 8:30 p.m.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the Surgery Housestaff Office at 314-362-8028 to talk with Michelle or Karree; or e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org
